Topic The Industrial Athlete: Safety as an Awareness Problem

Most companies share these  goals for their workforce – increase productivity and reduce costs.  Injured employees cost their employers through claims, PTO, and through increased Emods; and, when not reported, through lack of productivity and increased risk.

As opposed to starting with solutions to reduce injuries, like stretch and flex, the equation should be flipped; first understand the demands of the job, the job’s effect on those who do it, and the culture of the organization.

Companies set and manage safety protocols and make considerable investments to create  safe work environments.  The missing component is that the worker is the most dangerous factor on site.  Every company has a procedure for inspecting a work site and equipment, but very few consider the risk presented by the workers’ movement limitations and mental acuity.  This is especially true of the worker themselves.

For the worker to consider the risk they present they need to understand their limitations, how to work with those limitations safely, and –  when possible – how to improve them.
